Internet Usage among Malaysian Students The Role of Demographic and Motivational Variables

>

The Internet has pervaded our daily lives, and the world of education is no exception; reliance on teachers and textbooks only may be a thing of the past. Teachers are expected to facilitate learning, while students are encouraged and expected to source for related material from multiple sources, especially from the Cyberspace. The extent and pattern of usage of the Internet amongst students in Malaysia is the primary focus of this study. This study investigates the relationship between motivational variables (intrinsic and extrinsic), demographic variable and the Internet usage activities (messaging, downloading, browsing and purchasing). It was found that males exhibit higher usage of messaging, browsing and downloading activities and also as the education level progresses the use of browsing and downloading activities increases whereas age was negatively related to messaging activities. The findings also show that perceived usefulness is an important driver of Internet usage. Perceived ease of use was only positively related to browsing and downloading activities while perceived enjoyment was positively related to messaging, browsing and purchasing activities. Implications of the findings are further explored. T Ramayah; Chairman, Operations Mangement Section, School of Manegemnt: Universiti Sains, Malaysia
