The Mechanics of Fiber Optic Technology

>

This paper discusses the history, mechanics, and application of fiber optic technology. Beginning with some background about the first experiments involving fiber opticconcepts, such as using water as an optical conduit, this paper will explain the physicsbehind fiber optic technology, including refractive index, optical cladding, and otheraspects of light circuitry. Finally, I plan to give a few examples of applications whichhave been brought about by our exploration of fiber optics. Ultimately, I want to conveythe importance of fiber optics in today’s society, as well as instill an appreciation for thephysics behind this modern technology.By Ryan Wiseman
