A STUDY ON MERCURY POLLUTION AS IMPACT OF SMALL SCALE ILLEGAL GOLD MINING ACTIVITY IN CIKANIKI RIVER, CISADANE SUB. WA TERSHED, BOGOR

>

ABTRACT
Degradation of surface water has now been threatening the purpose and even its sustainability. One of the rivers get/ing such a threat is Cikaniki, which flows to Cianten River and terminated at Cisadane River. Cikaniki is located in Nanggung, a sub district of Bogor.
Some activities such es small scale illegal gold mining that ignore environmental aspect occurred in the upstream pf the river. The gold mining causes erosion, sedimentation, and the disposal of mercury (Hg) as waste of gold ore processing into the river. The process is highly influence on water qus/ffy of the river, which is used by the surrounding community for domestic purposes. The aims of this study were to reveal physic-chemical water quality in the river body, the rote of pollution, potential source or location of pollution and to collect data of water quality status that presumably occurred after getting disposal or waste. The study was carried out in July to October 2003 by collecting and analyzing physical and chemical parameters in four observations and at different time in Cikaniki. Analyzed primary parameters were pH, DO, BOD, COD, NHJ-N. and heavy motals (Hg, Pb, and Cd) by standard mol/lGds of APHA AWWA (2000). Supporting paremators such as current, turbidity, temperoture, conductivity. Some parameters woro diroctly measured In tlro fluId, and ol/rofS were analyzed in Hydrochemistry Laboratory, Research Center for Limnology. The result shows that majority of water quality parameters of Cikanikl River are still under the limit tolerated value based on Indonesian Gogerment rogulation for river water No. 8212001 .. Some other parameters show outside the maximum limit such as concentration of BOD (0.97 - 4.49 mgIL), COD (8.78 - 59.43 mgIL), NH3-N (0.001 - 0.086 mgIL), and Hg (0.0023 - 0.1743 mgIL). Based on tile observation, it is concluded that pollution has occurred in every station and time of observation by BOD, COD, NHrN, and Hg wastes. Mercury had average concentration of 35 times the maximum limit stated for Class 1/1(0.002 mgIL) and Class IV (0.005 mgIL). Based on the result, some parameters have to be taken in to account and need direct follow up to handle the pollution especially the impact of Mercury pollution, which has negative impact to the environment. Key word: mercury pollution, small scale illegal gold mining (PETI), Cikaniki River, Pongkor.
