The Application Of Geographical Information System For Siting Of Radioactive Waste Disposal

>

In Indonesia, until now its have not developed yet theapplication of Geographical Information System (GIS) for sitting of radioactive waste disposal. It is need to introduce the application of the GIS technology for sitting.
The GIS would be useful in the stage of land inventory, evaluation, classification and planning of the objective, because the GIS can support the process acceleration, accuracy 3nd spatial data integration presented in the thematic maps form. Site selection of radioactive waste disposal both near sulface disposal (NSD) type or deep-geological disposal (DGD) type have been developed systematically in 4 (four) stage: 1) concept and planning; 2) area survey; 3) site characterization; and 4) site confirmation. Practically, site selection could be conducted with negative screening and positive screening which include overlay and scoring. The scope of GIS application on the sitt:: selection would include in the data sources, data management and spatial data analysis. As a conclution could be notsd that the application of GIS for site sa!ection would be very useful in helping of: 1) spatial data storage, data management and data integration; 2) analysis of data specifICally related to graphical data component; and 3) organizing data so that the information can be used by all users.
